Welcome to the Boise, Idaho, Area Branch of
AAUW.
The Boise Area Branch was formed in 1909 and originally named the College Women's Club. Jane Hoover served as the first president. At that time, the national organization was called the Association of Collegiate Alumnae (ACA), and in 1910 a delegate was sent to the national convention in Denver, CO. Over the years, the Branch has been a powerful voice for equity in Idaho's capital city. In 2001, Patricia Wickman and Karen Svea Johnson collaborated on The Boise Branch of the the American Association of University Women in the 20th Century: A History, which describes our local organization in a broader historical context.
The branch meets monthly, September through May. Over the years, members have developed a number of eclectic interest groups, which bring like-minded women together to address cultural and social topics, and to have fun!
Upcoming programs will be posted to the Calendar as they become available; time and location are added as they are confirmed. For more information, consult the Boise Area Branch newsletter, at left in PDF (when available). Membership information may be found at the bottom of the page.
A $765.00 scholarship was awarded to a female student entering the junior or senior year at Boise State University. To qualify the applicant had to have at least a 3.0 accumulative grade point average (GPA), be an Idaho resident planning to enroll full-time during the 2009-2010 academic year, and slated to graduate by May 2011.

Over the past year we have visited three institutions as part of our monthly meetings. All were interesting and challenging to our understanding of others' needs. We were left with the question…"what can we do to assist these organizations?".
»In October we were given a tour of the Interfaith Sanctuary which provides overnight shelter and supportive services for men, women, and families with children. When asked how our branch could assist them, Jayne Sorrels, the Shelter Director suggested a few things: There are many volunteer positions to be filled at the facility. They always need jam, and juice that can be used as a snack (their meals are provided at another facility close by) or as an emergency meal for people arriving late in the evening. Some other things are books (paperbacks are best) for their library and bedding.

»In November we were given a tour by Rhonda Murray of the Salvation Army Booth Memorial Campus, the Marian Prichett School whose mission is serving the needs of pregnant teens and to provide a safe haven for young women who want to earn their high school diploma while they have their baby. Their core belief is that “staying in school is the most important choice that a girl can make for her future, and that of her baby.” They have a wonderful nursery to care for the infants while the girls attend local High Schools. They need people occasionally, who can assist with getting the girls to appointments. Their greatest need at the present time, however, is diapers (mostly newborn to 3 months).

»In January we had a guest speaker, Ellen Albus, refugee youth program coordinator of the International Rescue Committee of Idaho. The IRC is a humanitarian organization whose task it is to resettle refugees, provide housing, jobs and basic services. They need money, volunteers of all types, but when asked for specific items that they might need she suggested toiletries for both men and women.
